Combat Ageing Skin by Switching Up Your Routine

18 May 2022

Here’s how you can minimise the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and improve your skin’s elasticity.

Have you ever looked at old photos of yourself and wondered why your skin looked different? You may realise that the fine lines around your eyes have now gotten more noticeable, or that your skin no longer has that youthful glow to it.

But fret not, as managing the signs of ageing skin is not impossible. It’s normal for your skin to age with you and care for it accordingly. Knowing what factors are at play and using the right products will keep your skin glowing and supple-looking.

Firm Up: Fine Lines and Wrinkles

The first few signs of ageing the skin shows, even as early as in mid- to late-20s, are fine lines and wrinkles. These micro-wrinkles that first appear usually around the eyes, are only visible at close range. They are also called crow’s feet. Fine lines are the result of a loss of skin elasticity due to the weakening of collagen and elastin fibres in the skin. This causes skin to lose tautness, become lax and form wrinkles. Other external factors like smoking and stress can also exacerbate this sign of ageing.

To combat the first appearance of light crow’s feet around the delicate eye area, try the IDS Skincare Prestige Eye Rescue. This concentrate has a balm-like texture that absorbs easily into delicate skin around the eye area. It contains powerful ingredients like zinc and magnesium, among other potent stuff that helps to minimise the appearance of crow’s feet, under-eye dark circles and puffiness.

Another product you want to have on hand is Elizabeth Arden’s Retinol Ceramide Capsules Line Erasing Night Serum. Ceramide and retinol are some of the best ingredients in skincare as they both slow down ageing signs by regulating your skin on different levels. The former helps lock in your skin’s water levels by strengthening its outer layer (epidermis), while the latter encourages skin cells to turn over at a faster pace. This will stimulate the skin’s production of collagen and elastin. Translated: Your skin will be smooth and plump after using this regularly.

As you grow older, fine lines will give way to deeper wrinkles, causing a jowly look. To target general firmness on all other parts of the face, apply Augustinus Bader's The Rich Cream twice daily. This award-winning moisturiser is intensely rich, hydrating and nourishing. It helps to strengthen the skin’s supportive fibres and also optimises cellular renewal to enhance the complexion's smoothness and firmness. Powered by its patented TFC8® technology and formulated with high potency botanicals rich in omega 6 fatty acids and antioxidants, it reduces moisture loss and keeps skin firm, taut and supple to the touch.

Brighten Up: Dull and Patchy Skin

Inner radiance and glow tend to fade when you enter your 30s and 40s. That’s when the complexion becomes dull and loses its dewy look.  Your skin has layers, and a dull colouring is due to a loss of moisture within the top layers. Uneven colouring can also be caused by slow cell-rate renewal, which tends to happen with age, or due to the lack of sleep, exercise and an unhealthy diet.

Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex (right in picture) can help your skin to optimise cell renewal and keep it well hydrated. This serum powerfully fights the look of multiple signs of ageing: it helps skin to look and feel smoother and less lined, to be more radiant, dewy and even-toned. With Chronolux™ Power Signal Technology, this deep- and fast-penetrating face serum reduces the look of multiple signs of aging and ensures skin regains radiance and hydration. For an added boost, you can pair this with the Estee Lauder Micro Essence Treatment Lotion with Bio-Ferment (left in picture). It minimises redness and calms the skin, giving it a more even texture and glow.

Clarins Double Serum also works to bring back the colour of youth on dull, ageing complexion. This anti-ageing serum is a water and oil-soluble formula that consists of a potent mix of age-control plant extracts. This combination is meant to effectively bring back a youthful glow, reduce wrinkles, even out skin tone, and reduce the appearance of pores. To further protect your skin, this anti-ageing treatment will form an enhanced hydrolipidic barrier (a thin veil that shields your skin from external aggressors like bacteria) on the surface.

Smoothen Texture: Dry, Bumpy Skin and Enlarged Pores

Young, healthy skin has a high moisture content, leading to a fresh, dewy and radiant appearance. Over the years, this depletes, as the skin loses its ability to retain the moisture. Older skin is thus often characterised by dryness and dehydration.

But ageing skin can still maintain its moisture with a daily dose of the Clé de Peau Beauté Firming Serum Supreme. This luxurious serum creates a sense of volume and hydrated plumpness from within, while targeting the skin’s surface to enhance skin’s suppleness. The serum consists of the Coix Lacryma-Jobi Ma-Yuen Seed Extract, which counters the effects of environmental aggression and reduces visible signs of dryness and dehydration.

As the skin matures, cell metabolic rate and turnover can become sluggish and slow down. This can cause an uneven complexion and bumps on the surface, as layers of dead cells pile up. Enter hyaluronic acid, a key ingredient that promotes healing, stimulates cell regeneration and prevents clogged pores. The DCI PRO AMC Hyaluronic Acid Booster is a fuss-free step to add to your routine – one that’ll generate long-term benefits. It can promote faster cell renewal and can hold 6,000 times its own weight in water, making it one of the most efficient hydration boosters available today.

Hormonal changes as you grow older can cause your pores to produce more oil, resulting in an enlarged effect when they get clogged. For minimising pores and overall skin repair, Aspurely’s Anti-Aging Sculpting Night Cream is the game changer you need. This is an intensive firming and smoothening cream that helps detox your skin as you sleep. One of its key ingredients is the Resurrection Plant, the only plant known to have survived the last age – its reparative qualities are a result of it being able to produce large amounts of antioxidants. This will help increase your skin cells’ resistance to aging and protect them from damage.

Shield and Protect: Sun-Ageing, Blotchiness and Pigmentation

As skin ages, it also becomes thinner. Tiny blood capillaries tend to show through thinning skin, making one’s complexion blotchy. Blotchy, unevenly pigmentated skin adds to the appearance of ageing. A change in melanin production as you grow older can also result in parts of the skin producing more melanin than others when exposed to the sun, bringing about a condition called pigmentation or age spots.

Thankfully, this is not a list of problems that the Shiseido Power Brightening Set cannot solve. While the Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate visibly improves hydration and smoothness using the ImuGenerationRED Technology™, the White Lucent Brightening Gel Cream will brighten skin and diminish the look of dark spots and unevenness. Over time, its proprietary SAKURA-Bright Complex continues to offer brightening effects to combat patchiness caused by hyper-pigmentation and thinning skin.

To further eradicate the effects of UV exposure, Dr. GL Sun Protection Anti-Aging offers next-level anti-ageing and sun-protection. The light, easily absorbed sunscreen blocks the sun's rays on the surface, while deep within skin, its antioxidant Gingko Biloba Leaf extract and skin-revitalising amino acids fight free radicals, neutralising them, and stimulating collagen production and blood circulation.
