CASTELLO DI AMA HAIKU 2019 [BUY ANY 2 GET 15% OFF]
[BUY ANY 2 GET 15% OFF]
Valid from 26 Apr 2024 - 12 May 2024

Haiku originated in 2009 with the acquisition of the Montebuoni vineyard, whose replanting was completed in 2001. This standout wine is a blend of three varieties: 50% Sangiovese, with the remainder divided in equal measure between Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The name is inspired by the traditional Japanese verse in three phrases, whose power lies in allusions to nature and which requires clear thinking and imagination. Haiku is a powerful wine, initially supple before impressing with its audacity, substance and refinement.

Introducing Castello di Ama, an impressive recipient of 10 Gambero Rosso “3 glass” awards from 2004 – 2014 editions. Founded in 1972, Castello di Ama is one of Tuscany’s leading wineries that produces widely acclaimed wines. Today it is run by second generation Lorenza Sebasti and her winemaker husband Marco Pallanti who was named Winemaker of the Year in the 2003 edition of the most authoritative Italian wine guide, Gambero Rosso. Its San Lorenzo wine was also Wine Spectator’s sixth highest rated wine in 2014.

Tasting Notes:
Colour: intense purple red with ruby-red nuances.
Nose: fruity (fruits of the forest, such as raspberry and blackcurrants), spicy (pepper, wild herbs and tobacco)
Taste: good attack with a clear identity of the grape varieties. The wine is intrinsically elegant and natural freshness evolving in a silky finish.

Grape Varietal(s):
Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Merlot

Awards & Accolades (Robert Parker/ Wine Spectator/ James Suckling etc):

“The Castello di Ama 2019 Haiku is a blend of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. Marco Pallanti calls it "the alter ego of San Lorenzo," and the association to Japanese poetry is meant to portray "something simple that means a lot," he tells me during my visit to the estate. However, the Tuscan imprint is very strong in this wine, and although Merlot suffers from a changing climate, the Cabernet Franc imparts a firm and lasting textural impact. The Sangiovese brings in ruby fruit, rose, herb and fresh acidity. The 2019 vintage is big-boned, but it moves with grace and precision.” – Wine Advocate, 95 points

“A fresh and crunchy red with some fine tannins and lovely energy. Blackberries and raspberries with citrus-rind undertones. Medium body. A sangiovese, cabernet franc and merlot blend. Drink or hold.” – James Suckling, 93 points
