Co-founder and creative director of Momiji Kids, Ying shares how you can create a cosy and nurturing environment for your children at home.
The environment where a child grows up in, plays an important role in shaping their values and character. More than just a safe haven where they rest, a child’s bedroom is also where they dream, learn, and play. This is also why it is important to create stimulating spaces that will inspire and instil the right values in them.
Founded in 2019 by husband and wife team, Ying and Darren, Momiji Kids is a local brand known for its handcrafted vintage-style rattan pieces for children. Their functional yet chic designs, along with the brand’s focus on environment and heritage, have made them increasingly popular with parents.

When Ying and Darren first became parents, they accumulated many toys and furniture that were made from synthetic materials. By the time Ying was pregnant with her second child two years later, she found little utility in these plastics and ended up disposing them.
“I realised that we needed to get our little ones to appreciate the environment and do away with this throw-away culture,” shares Ying. This kickstarted their search for sustainably made toys and furniture for their children. During their babymoon in Indonesia, they chanced upon a local rattan craftsmen community and there, the idea of Momiji Kids was conceived.
Built on age-old traditions and sustainable principles, each piece of furniture is made in workshops or homes of talented artisans residing in Indonesia. This allows them to work at their own pace while raising their families. By partnering with these communities, the homegrown brand hopes to continue the legacy of traditional craftsmanship that has been mastered over generations. Each carefully crafted piece is a gentle nod to heritage while showing care towards the environment.

Ying, who is also the creative director for Momiji Kids, draws inspiration from her two children, Luke and Layla, and designs with them in mind. The use of rattan – a sustainable and malleable material – ensures that the end products are built to last. The result? Beautifully handcrafted yet durable furniture and toys for your children.

In addition to its style factor, Ying hopes to provide children with a space that they can look forward to at the end of the day. “Apart from being a space of fun, it is important to stage a child’s room as a haven that they will love, feel secure, and be comforted when they wake up, especially in this over stimulated world that we currently live in.”
Here are some tips from Ying on how to create a cosy living space for your little ones to flourish in.
1. Go for a neutral colour scheme

Use a mix of soothing hues and pastel colours to brighten up the room. Neutrals such as brown and beige are great base colours to work off and adds a soft yet whimsical touch to the room. And instead of the usual pink and blue tones, a blush or calming green sage can also add a pop of colour for your child’s room.
2. Choose versatile and functional furniture
When picking out furniture for your child’s room, consider those with multiple functions to prevent clutter and maximise space.
“Versatility with style makes the cut for us! Our daughter, Layla, first used the Colette Toy Pram as a walker and she has been sprinting with it ever since!” The hand-woven rattan pram also serves as a sanctuary for your child’s favourite toys and adds a vintage look to the nursery or bedroom when not in use.
To help your kids stay organised, opt for fun storage pieces that are at their height, such as the pineapple and pear rattan baskets. These options are sure to make tidying up fun, while adding a touch of playfulness to the room.
3. Keep decors simple and interesting

When it comes to decorating a kid’s room, less is more. Incorporate subtle references and designs that interest your children rather than the entire room. For instance, opt for a dinosaur pillow or dinosaur-shaped basket instead of a full-blown Jurassic-themed room.
Ying also suggests personalising your kid’s room by displaying their keepsakes and artworks. Not only does that inject character and style into the room, these little details will also make up part of their precious memories while growing up.
4. Use natural materials and soft furnishings
Add warmth and cosiness to the room with natural materials like rattan and timber and include soft furnishings such as cushions or rugs.
Fancy a nostalgic nod to your own childhood? A timeless piece like the Maya Chair is a great addition and a perfect size for your little ones. Paying homage to the traditional rattan chair of the 70s, it is a convenient and comfortable spot for your kids to rest on and adds a playful pop of colour to the room.
