A New Lease on Life: Shop These Unique Upcycled Accessories & Homewares

9 March 2022

Add a piece of aviation history to your home and do your part for the environment with these sustainable objets d'art, repurposed from old Singapore Airlines items and planes.

Sustainability is a topic that has gotten a lot more attention in the recent years. Brands are stepping up their awareness and more are advocating it. But being sustainable isn’t just trendy, it’s practical - especially when you’re giving old items a new life.

Upcycling is one of the many ways you can be sustainable. Through this, you'll reduce waste and discarded materials by extending the usage of old items.

And that’s exactly what The Upcycling Project, an initiative by Singapore Airlines, is all about. The goal? To breathe new life into old parts and materials from the airline's retired aircraft parts, and in turn, create one-of-a-kind pieces that combine purposeful upcycling with thoughtful craftsmanship. Created in collaboration with homegrown and international lifestyle brands, these unique pieces are not only sustainably designed, but also represent a significant piece of SIA’s esteemed heritage and history.

From a statement furniture piece to chic apparel, read on to find out more about these exclusive upcycled products you can own.

Unique Homewares Made from Plane Parts

The Supermama's Time to Destination Plate makes a novel addition to any dinner table. Made from upcycled Business Class tableware, the plates from this collection were created to commemorate Singapore Airlines' inaugural A380 flight in 2007 as they were the first airline to fly the world's largest airliner.

And to complete your dinner table, the Photo Phactory Napkins and Coasters will fit the theme perfectly. Available in a set of six, they were upcycled from retired Singapore Airlines table linens, and feature recognisable motifs and patterns of Peranakan tiles.

Every home needs a statement piece – one that will elevate any space and spark conversation. The Air Jack Side Table By Ipse Ipsa Ipsum will certainly do just that. A feat of engineering and aviation design, the cast aluminium green brackets of this side table originate from the base structure of a Singapore Airlines aircraft. The made-to-order piece is then finished with a glass tabletop for a striking yet sturdy design.

Sustainably Stylish Wardrobe Additions

From left: ANS.EIN Jumpsuit and Cape Jacket

With an aim to create apparel as wearable art, ANS.EIN has managed to incorporate an old Singapore Airlines’ life vest into the focal point, a chic obi belt, of this jumpsuit. The belt can be worn two ways. Also part of the same ANS.EIN collection is the cape jacket with a distinctive ruffle-design, that will instantly turn an outfit into a power look.

Add a pop of colour with a fun and functional accessory like this Photo Phactory’s Mandarin Orange Clutch Bag. Created in collaboration with Singapore Airlines, this vibrant piece features dual-side designs: a houndstooth design upcycled from the airline’s signature Business Class cushion covers on one side, and a bright Peranakan tile motif on the other.

For those who enjoy collecting eclectic pieces, this Wristlet Clutch by Tocco Toscano is a sound choice. The pouch is made from actual Singapore Airlines life vests and lined with vegan leather derived from apple pomace and peel. Plus, the red pull-tab of the life vest functions as a zipper puller.

In-Flight Upcycled Accessories for Every Jet-setter

Keep travel essentials such as your passport, boarding pass, and cards organised with the SPD Passport Sleeve. Crafted by SPD artisans with special needs, this upcycled leather piece is made from retired Business Class seats for a sleek and distinguished finish. It can also be hot stamped with gold or silver foil so that you can customise it with your own initials.

Travel light – and do good at the same time – with this waist pouch designed by youths with special needs and their caregivers from Singapore Fashion Runway. Upcycled from old Singapore Airlines life vests, this versatile pouch can be worn around your waist or as a cross-body.

Travelling with a baby? Be sure to pack this adorable baby bib in your carry-on. Emblazoned with the iconic ‘Property of SIA’ stamp, this bib is iconic and a must-have for mealtimes onboard flights. Plus, its water-resistant material that will keep your baby protected from any spills.
