Tips to Work Better From Home

8 April 2020

Discover more ways you can keep yourself motivated and focused in your home office.

1. Keep the same habits

Maintaining your morning routine will help you get into the right mindset to start work. If you wake at 7am every day to get to work on time, keep at it. Start your day by reading the news on your commute and a hot cup of coffee or tea? You can do the same from the comfort of your own home.

But before you enjoy your morning cuppa, remember to change out of your sleepwear. Not only does it help you to ease into your work schedule, it also ensures that you won’t be caught off guard by an urgent video call.

2. Work in a different space

Unlike breakfast, work is something that is best done out of bed. So no matter how tempting it is to sit propped up on your bed with your laptop, it’s more productive for you to set up a specific work area that is ideally not in your bedroom. This also helps you to keep work hours and off-hours separate, especially since you’re working from home.

3. Set the right mood with music and scents

Apart from a designated workspace in your home, there are more ways to create a more conducive environment for work.

If you work better with some sounds in the background, playing some music that you’re familiar with can actually help you tune into the right frame of mind. Your song choice also makes a difference too – soothing melodies can relax your mind, while upbeat tunes can keep you motivated. Being at home also means you’re free to use speakers without fear of disturbing your colleagues.

Or if you need a quieter environment to be productive, you can opt for noise-cancelling earbuds so you can zero in on your tasks.

Similarly, scents can also get you in the mood for work – something you may not get to do in the office. From soothing to refreshing, there are different essential oils, scented candles, and even room sprays that can provide you with a stress-free environment or one that help you hyper-focus.

4. Get in the zone with the help of some colours

It’s scientifically proven that colours can affect your productivity – we’re not saying you should paint your walls, but there are accessories you can use to help you work better from home depending on the nature of your job.

Blue: If you need maximum focus for administrative tasks and projects.
Optional: A splash of orange for extra inspiration.

5. Take short breaks

When you’re working at home, it’s all too easy to lose track of time – which is why it’s important to take short breaks. Whether it’s brewing an aromatic cup of afternoon tea or enjoying a quick snack, a brief breather can help your brain defocus to recombine ideas and seek out big picture strategies. Plus, an occasional walk around your house and some simple stretches can help alleviate some of the aches from sitting too long.
