No Plans This June? Pick Up A New Hobby

18 June 2022

Switch up your mundane routine and try something new.

Now that it’s past the mid-year mark, some of us may start to feel like we’re in need of a change in pace. And if your year isn’t already filled with vacation plans or social gatherings, you may want to consider picking up a new hobby this June.

“But do I really need a new hobby?”

To put things into perspective, hobbies aren’t a ‘need’ but they’re definitely a ‘good-to-have’. Research has proven that new hobbies not only improve your mental health, but they’re also beneficial to your cognitive functioning. According to a study published by the American Psychological Association (APA), it was observed that having creative goals outside of work can help increase positive affect, which are feelings like engagement, contentment and interest. These emotions contribute significantly to how we go about our day and function as human beings.

Ahead, are some interesting activity ideas for you to try out and, perhaps, develop a new hobby.

Learn a New Sport

For those who regularly head to the gym or simply enjoy working out, trying out a new sport may be up your alley.

There’s been a revival in the skating scene, in the form of roller skates and skateboards. It’s the perfect excuse to head out and cruise along the walkways whenever you feel like you need a breather.

For those who enjoy water activities, wakesurfing has also seen a resurgence lately. And why not? It’s a great way to work your core and overall body strength.

But if you prefer a more relaxed sport that also allows you to socialise, try golfing. One of the reasons why golf is such a popular sport is that you can always get your family and friends on board. It’s a great activity that allows anyone, of every skill level, to come together and have fun. Plus, it’s always fun to ride around in the golf carts.

Get Back Into Arts and Craft

Do you recall having a tonne of fun during your art classes as a child? Don’t push that creative streak away. Instead, turn your childhood nostalgia into a form of relaxation - a break from your routine.

Going for an introductory pottery class is a great way to get back into arts and craft. You’ll be surprised at what 2 hours of pushing and moulding clay can do for your mind. Turn the cool and soft clay into a cup, bowl or a trinket holder - whatever you decide to make, you’ll definitely find a use for it.

If you’re one for products with calming scents, candle and soap making workshops are worth trying. These workshops are perfect for girls’ night out if you and your friends want to do something a little different from your usual drinks and food. Mix and match various scents, layer them into the product to craft candles and soap bars you can uniquely call your own.

Broaden Your Tech Skills

Here’s one for those who are constantly fascinated by tech and the digital space. If you’ve got additional free time on your hands, coding is a great skill to pick up. Not only will you enjoy the process of picking up coding languages, you may very well develop a side gig from this high-in-demand skill.

Videography, another nifty skill to have in your pocket, is also an extremely rewarding hobby. Learn all about framing, camera angles and colours - all of which are ways that will help to tell a great story. And all you need to start is a smartphone. Pick an object you want to focus on and film it from various angles, in different lighting and backgrounds to practice. This is a great way to create the positive affect mentioned earlier, as you’re constantly engaged in a creative project that will allow you to create goals, separate from your work.
