5 Ways to Motivate Yourself to Work Out

27 June 2021

Break out of your exercise rut and get your momentum going.

Finding it difficult to get off the couch and into your activewear? You are not alone. Despite regular exercise being beneficial for your physical and mental health, you may still find yourself hitting the snooze button or putting off the gym session indefinitely. Here are some ways to get over the workout rut and help you to stay motivated.

1. Get a Workout Buddy

While some may prefer exercising alone, planning regular workout sessions with a buddy can keep you on track, especially on days where you need that extra push. Whether you are working out physically together, online, or just checking-in via text, you are less likely to procrastinate when you are accountable to someone.

It is also easier to try new workouts or classes together with a partner. Not only does it encourage you to step out of your comfort zone, a little friendly competition may even spur you on to push boundaries and unlock new achievements. In addition, having a buddy to work out with can make the experience more enjoyable, and you are more likely to continue your exercise routine.

2. Set Goals and Track Your Progress

Setting realistic goals based on your current fitness level is key to staying committed. Challenging yet achievable goals with clear milestones can keep your momentum going as you work towards your set target.

Consider investing in a fitness tracker where you can set goals and review your progress on-the-go. For instance, the Apple Watch Series 6 allows you to monitor your daily activity, track your exercise sessions, and even measure your blood oxygen level. With the data from your workouts, the smartwatch also provides personalised exercise challenges and movement goals to help you achieve better results.

Equipped with more than 25 built-in sports app, Garmin’s Venu 2S makes it a breeze to explore new workouts, and is sure to jazz up your exercise routine. Aside from its cutting-edge health monitoring and fitness tracking features, this GPS smartwatch also comes preloaded with animated, on-screen workouts. From cardio to strength training, you can follow along the exercises right on your wrist.

3. Invest in Suitable Activewear

Activewear does more than just make you look good. A new set of workout gear can be a source of motivation as well. While you are at it, ensure that the activewear provides sufficient support for the type of exercise that you are engaging in.

Contrary to what most people think, the material used in activewear does make a difference to your workout. Proper compression and breathability can maximise performance and even aid recovery process in between workouts.

Case in point: Yumi Active's Kanso II Highwaist Leggings. Made using 4-way stretch fabric, it allows unrestricted movements, making it suitable for all exercises. Its advanced moisture wicking-technology helps to regulate body temperature by keeping you dry even during intense workouts. The added microbial finish also prevents odour and bacteria growth. Kydra’s Kyro leggings is another option with a seamless waistband and leg opening, ensuring a comfortable workout experience.

4. Make Exercising a Habit

Incorporating exercise into your lifestyle takes time and effort. The more convenient it is to work out, the more inclined you are to do it. For instance, find a gym that is close to home, office, or en route to work. Or if you are following an online fitness video at home, put on your activewear when you wake up for that added motivation.

Make it easier by engaging in workouts that you actually enjoy. For a start, try out different activities to figure out what you like. Once you find something you enjoy, you are more likely to stick to it. Or when you are starting to get bored of your workout routine, mix it up by attempting a new exercise or class.

To set yourself up for success, plan and prepare ahead for your workout. While some may prefer kickstarting the day with a morning workout, others would rather sleep in and exercise in the evening after they knock off. Regardless of the timing, block out one that is suitable for you and add it to your calendar as a reminder. If you are up for it, take it a step further by creating a workout schedule or checklist to include rest days and exercises that trains different parts of your body.

5. Reward Yourself

Nothing motivates like a reward does. Benefits from exercising, such as improved stamina and strengthened muscles, tend to be more long term. However, you can still celebrate fitness milestones along the way to keep the momentum going.

Plan for a reward that you can look forward to after a session of hard work. It can be as simple as a post-workout snack or a cheat-date with your buddy. A set of new activewear or an indulgent sports massage session are also great ways to treat yourself, while fuelling your fitness journey.
