5 Ways to Keep Your Mental Health in Check

8 October 2021

Taking care of your mental well-being is just as essential as your physical health.

In recent times, the added uncertainty have undoubtedly taken a toll on one's health. While many have taken steps to look after the physical aspects of their lives, but what about your mental health?

Mental health includes your emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and cope with our lives.

If you find yourself feeling constantly tired and unmotivated, it may be tell tale signs to pay more attention to your mental health. Here are some ways to enhance your mental well-being.

Take Breaks and Engage in Me-Time

Be it work or studies, one thing we can all agree on is that taking an occasional break is important for your overall well-being. As much as you may enjoy what you do, a state of fatigue can happen to anyone who works or studies for an extended period of time. To prevent that from happening, it is essential to have some alone time to unwind, realign your goals, and recharge before tackling what is to come.

Besides the usual five-minute screen-free breaks, an hour a day or even a weekend away can help to refresh your mind and soul. Set aside time for me-time activities such as a weekend spa or or try something new by signing up for fun workshops, where you can momentarily take your mind off the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

If you’re more of an adventure seeker who enjoys a moment of serenity, take a day off and spend it off-land instead. Why not try your hand at fishing while you are out at sea? This gives you the opportunity to fully immerse in the activity, free from distractions. Plus, you even get to enjoy your very own live catches at the end of the day!

Learn to Say No

Do you instinctively say “Yes” to  requests without understanding what they entail? It may be habitual or the undue pressure and guilt that come with rejecting someone.

At times, accepting a request without knowing the details may result in unnecessary stress and can affect your mental health more than you know. For instance, the added responsibility and worry that you are unable to deliver can increase your anxiety levels or lower your self-confidence.

Saying no does not necessarily make you a bad person. On the contrary, it allows you to set boundaries and gives you the chance to assess and manage your workload. It can even provide you with peace of mind, as you’re able to focus on producing quality work for the tasks on hand.

The next time someone asks for a favour, make it a habit to assess the requirements holistically and only accept those that you are able to take on. Don't be afraid to let them know if you need more time to consider. This mindful step will help manage your mental capacity and ensure that you don't end up beyond your limits.

Eat Well, Sleep Well

Studies have shown that eating and sleeping habits affect your overall health. By eating better and with sufficient rest, the happier and healthier you may feel - both physically and mentally.

With work from home blurring the lines of meal times, it is has become more common to skip meals, eat at odd hours or settle for something quick and convenient, like instant noodles or microwavable food. However, these foods tend to have little to no nutrients and can cause you to feel even more tired and lethargic. Instead, make a conscious effort to include nutritious food in your diet.

When you’re feeling peckish, opt for healthy home-made fruit juices and superfood snacks instead of reaching for high sodium potato chips. If you’re often pressed for time, try easy-to-cook meals with the help of an all-in-one cooker. With multiple cooking settings, you can prepare the ingredients ahead of time and leave the pot to work its wonders. The result? A fuss-free yet nutritious meal that does not compromise on taste.

Besides eating right, good sleeping habits are key to a well-rested mind and body. Here are some tips for a good night's rest:

  • Pick the right accessories for your sleeping style.
  • Set your electronics devices aside at least 45 minutes before sleeping.
  • Reduce your liquid intake 1 to 2 hours before going to bed.
  • Create a relaxing atmosphere with calming and soothing scents like lavender or sage to put your mind at ease.

Stay Active

Exercising not only builds muscles and strengthens your body, it also enhances your overall mental health by reducing the levels of stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline. At the same time, exercising also releases feel-good neurotransmitter, known as endorphins, that trigger a positive feeling.

Experts recommend at least 150 minutes of exercise a week or 20 to 30 minutes daily. Depending on your activity level, it can range from a stroll in the park or neighbourhood to cardio-intensive exercises like boxing, spinning, and even aerobic dance classes.

If you find it challenging to exercise, try to create momentum by starting with shorter workouts. Once you’ve gotten used to it, you can slowly increase the frequency and duration of your sessions. Tip: Engage in an exercise routine that you enjoy. Not only will you reap the benefits of exercising, you’ll also find that it’s easier to stay motivated.

Declutter Your Space

Most of our time are spent at home, even more so these days with work-from-home being more prevalent. This is also why it is important for your environment to be conducive.

A clean and organised space can boost comfort levels and improve overall well-being. When it comes to work, a clutter-free workspace can increase productivity while reducing frustrations at the same time.

By decluttering and reorganising your home, your mind focuses on what is on-hand instead of being filled with thoughts of other stressful matters. Studies have also shown that the act of cleaning can provide your mind, body, and soul respite from the day-to-day stressors. It can also be a way to help you feel in control of your situation. With matters in your own hands, your mind is also able to recalibrate and recharge.
