Get Set For The Hottest Trends This Fall

22 September 2021

What’s hot this Fall in fashion, beauty and home-styling, according to international designers, top makeup artists and home interior experts around the world.

Another fresh Fall season is here – time for a change-up of looks, styles, silhouettes, textures, and colours. The start of a new season calls for a spot of shopping to update your personal style and your humble abode.

Here are some inspirations from top designers, beauty experts, and home styling gurus, for your Fall 2021 shopping list.

HALL OF FASHION

The Fall 2021 fashion landscape showcases a return to excess in terms of details, shapes, and colours – in other words, more is more. Silhouettes are oversized, fabrics are embellished, flushed with details, and colours are saturated.

Fashion In Excess

Some key looks spotted in the fashion collections are about opulence, rich details and interesting embellishments in the form of ruffles, sequins, applique, fringes and technicolour print. Colour-wise, it’s a youthful Fall in saturated shades of saffron, lemon yellow, green, lavender and red.

Shop the Trends:
Kanzi Collection Ikat Sleeveless Bomber Jacket with Fringes: Zipped down and undone, this 100% hand-woven staple can be worn over a fitted cropped top, or an embellished bralette.

Photo Phactory Peranakan Tiles Pleated Skirt: It nails modern-provincial down-pat. Great with a crisp, white, oversized shirt, this piece from the Singapore Capsule Collection Peranakan series is inspired by the beautiful tiles, porcelain and fabric from the Peranakan culture.

Janavi India Cashmere Stole with butterfly applique: Embrace Fall with this soft cashmere wrap embellished with multi-coloured sequins and ostrich feathers in a butterfly pattern.

R Y E Cocoon Dress with Back Detail in Flame: Its voluminous silhouette, saturated vermillion colour and deep V neckline at the back make it on-trend, day to night, this Fall.

Upsized Bags

For handbags, the message is clear: bigger is better this season, and the styles to carry are totes and clutches. For totes, a slightly slouchy piece works for weekends, while a more structured carrier will take one through any work week.

If you prefer something to hold closer to your body, the chunky day clutch is perfect for Fall. Make yours a zip-up or with a granny frame clasp, but make sure it’s capacious. Lovers of hands-free bags, however, will be happy to know that slings of different incarnations – those with chain or leather shoulder straps – are still swinging this season, as seen in many Fall bag look books. These versatile bags also afford a different look when worn trendily as crossbodies.

Shop the Trends:
Kmana Maya Leather Tote Bag: Lightweight, minimalist and functional, this oversized rectangular tote laces up at the top and comes with an attached wallet to carry all your essentials.

Kanyeka Charmaine Round Clutch Bag: An eye-catching conversation starter, this electric blue leather clutch, with its crescent shape and dangling pearl accents is great with jeans and a tee, as well as a cocktail dress.

Rebecca Minkoff Chevron Quilted Love Crossbody: A fresh, modern take on a classic purse style, this sophisticated crossbody bag in soft, luxe leather, will make a statement for many seasons.

Scarves Ahead

Fall’s accessory trend to wear is the scarf as headgear. This can easily be replicated with any cotton or silk scarf or kerchief. For a new-school peasant charm, knot it under your chin; for a cool bohemian air, knot it under your hair at the nape, or tie it up gypsy style.

Shop the Trends:
Julie White Lorikeet 100% Silk Scarf: This large silk square scarf features hand-drawn Australian lorikeet birds in a quandong tree – a colourful, nature-inspired, country-charm print.

Binary Style Tiong Bahru in Monochrome Cotton Silk Blend Scarf: This stylish monochrome, graphic-print scarf affords the wearer an urban bohemian air.

BEAUTY BAY

Equally maximalist are Fall’s lush beauty offerings. Eyes are heavily lined, sooty and smoky, with a metallic sheen that harks back to the days of disco chic in the ’70s. Lips follow suit by looking full, with deeply saturated hues and lots of high shine. Like Fall’s fashion silhouettes, beauty’s hair trends are also about volume – the bigger the hair and curls, the sexier.

Intense Liner

Full-on bold black eyeliner, complete with inverted fishtails, was spotted on the runway models at Paris Fashion Week F/W2021. This look can be achieved with liquid or gel liner. With the new precision eyeliner brushes, and formulas that are super soft and set quickly, even novices can pull it off easily.

Shop the Looks:
Privia Double Kill Long-Wear Eyeliner: Perfect your Fall eyeliner game with this waterproof, smudge-proof, intense black felt-tip pen liner. Its pointed marker allows you to draw both thin and bold lines, depending on how you hold it.

Ange Gardien Paris Vivid Precision Ink Liner: Richly saturated, this eyeliner’s inky pigment dries quickly for a long-lasting finish that takes you from morning to evening. This waterproof formula has a silky texture that allows the ink to slide across easily and precisely, thanks to the sharp, high-tension pen tip.

Disco Metallics

Fall’s nod to disco eyes means metallics are back. According to makeup artist Pat McGrath, the look is more refined than over-the-top, well-blended with one shade or a whole spectrum.

Shop the Looks:
Diego Dalla Palma Walk of Fame Face and Eye Palette: This absolute sparkling makeup palette comes with 5 eyeshadows, 1 blush and 1 highlighter, to create the perfect smoky disco look.

Esqa Goddess Eyeshadow Palette Bronze: The Goddess Eyeshadow Palette captures 9 highly pigmented, buildable and blendable shadows into one single palette. It features a combination of matte, shimmer, pressed pearl and satin finishes, all you need to transition from a day to a night eye look.

Saturated High-Shine Lips

Makeup artist Gita Bass says go loud and shiny for lips this no-holds-barred Fall. Deep lip colours to wear run the gamut of burgundy to crimson. If gloss is impractical in our windy weather, go for a creamy effect instead. It’s subtler yet equally standout.

Shop the Looks:
Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge Drama Matte: This innovative stay-true lip colour not only provides rich pigments but also keeps lips moisturised and comfortable.

Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Lipstick in Rosy Red: This creamy, lightweight treatment lipstick is made of natural mineral pigments. It hydrates, plumps up lips and helps fight signs of ageing.

Hair – Volume Up

According to Leigh Keates, John Frieda’s creative styling consultant, volume is the look this Fall 2021 – volume created by full curls, a textured cut, or a good blow-out, as hairdos take inspiration from long, sexy shags of the ’70s.

Short hair fans can still keep it brief but full, with the bob. As spotted by Frederic Fekkai, the trendy one-length of choice is between the jawline and collarbone. Finger-dried or full-blown, keep it un-slicked and natural-looking.

Shop the Looks:
Dyson Airwrap Complete Hair Styler: This all-in-one styling aid is engineered for multiple hair types, with barrels to curl and wave, and brushes to control, smooth or add volume.

PHS Hairscience Adv Argan Oil Treatment: With all that curling and blowing, your hair will benefit from its intensive repair treatment capabilities, that of balancing hair’s natural moisture, while strengthening and improving its elasticity, and minimising breakage. Best applied as a leave-in treatment before styling.

BRINGING NATURE HOME

Your wardrobe and vanity table aren’t the only spaces that need content elevation this Fall. An on-trend abode is the heart of the stylish homeowner, where tasteful design statements for a new season are played out and displayed.

At home, the interior design direction for Fall 2021 is an eclectic mix of natural and organic trends. Wicker and stone get sculptural, while warm, earthy tones continue to feature in a big way.

A common inspiration thread is nature – in the form of sculptural shapes seen in trees, smoothened stones in a gully, the pops of vibrant colours on flower petals, as well as Fall’s irresistibly war and cosy hues.

Wicker Chic

Sculpted rattan pieces for the home combine organic shapes with natural materials –  just what Fall 2021 calls for. And the look works for many parts of the home too, from the bedroom to the living room, even the patio, or balcony.

Shop the Styles:
Momiji Kids Pear Basket: Weave a touch of fun to any room with this versatile and practical storage basket, which comes conveniently with a removable washable lining.

Steve & Leif Rattan Outdoor/Indoor Furniture Set: This comfy, compact, hand-woven and eco-friendly furniture set is sturdy and weather-proof. Made from polyethylene rattan, this outdoor furniture set is not just, scratch- and water-resistant but also protected from UV and insects.

Get Stoned

Functional natural art in materials like stone and marble can easily be incorporated in the kitchen and bathroom, such as tabletops, tiles, even flatware and drinkware.

Shop the Style:
Ro Collection Drinkware Set in Lava Stone: Besides being cute, the small jug is ergonomic, pouring perfectly through a wide spout. It is suitable for both cold and hot beverages.

Colour Fall

The spectrum of colours to embrace features brown, gold, and grey, though they need not be showcased through hard furnishings. Changing up soft furnishings, like curtains and bed linen, can easily give your home a cosy Fall glow.

Fall is also about unexpected pops of bright colours. Pick an area in each room to add splashes of shiny brights, whether they be from a side table, a reading chair, or even fancy picture frames

Shop the Styles:
Oasis Living Magnifique Charcoal Tencel Jacquard Bed Set: This set combines aesthetics with comfort and technology. Tencel is extremely soft, comparable to silk. Charcoal effectively absorbs odour and moisture, keeping the sheets fresh and odour-free.

Ipse Ipsa Ipsum Armenian Street Nesting Tables: This colourful hand-crafted double-tray side table top can be stacked neatly together when not in use, and unstacked to hold drinks, food and other decorative knick-knacks.

Vase Difference

Fall 2021’s cue to bringing nature into the home inevitably means decorating it with all manner of blooms and greens. And the vessels of choice this season are statement vases, which, in themselves, are already pretty decorative features to behold.

Shop the Styles:
Menu Troll Vase in Amber: A vase with graduating colour intensity, depending on the thickness of the glass. It is beautiful on its own, or with a generous arrangement of blooms and leaves.

Lalique Tourbillons Clear Crystal Vase: Created in 1926 by René Lalique, the Tourbillons Vase takes its shape from the movement of the fern blossom. Its curves stunningly follow the rhythm of light, drawing the eye into swirls of crystal.
