7 Ways to Go Green in Your Daily Life

18 June 2020

A handy guide to the different ways to make earth-friendly decisions that will contribute to saving our planet.

The importance of making going green in our daily lives cannot be understated. After all, we only have one planet we call home and everyone can do their part to care for it. But living a sustainable lifestyle can sometimes be easier said than done, especially when you don’t know where to start.

Our best advice – start small. Instead of trying to overhaul your life all at once, practice small eco-conscious methods one at a time. Every little bit counts and as existing green habits become second nature to you, you can then move on to incorporate even more sustainable habits in your daily life.

Here are 7 ways to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.

1. Reduce waste and recycle your trash

From empty drink bottles to plastic packaging, the products we consume daily result in the generation of a lot of waste. Where possible, buy items with minimal or recyclable packaging to minimise your impact on the environment.

Make it a habit to separate recyclables such as empty glass bottles, food tins and newspapers from your usual trash and place these items in recycling bins so they may be processed and reused. If you have a small home garden or keep potted plants, you can even compost vegetable ends or food scraps and add this to your plant soil to nourish your greens.

2. Cut down on non-recyclable items

There are now many ways to substitute disposable items with things that can be reused multiple times. For example, instead of drinking a cold beverage with a single-use straw or accepting plastic bags when you go shopping, bring along metal or bamboo straws and washable tote bags. If you are buying food to takeaway, carry your own food containers and cutlery sets. It may take a while to get used to packing these items in your bag but once you start doing it, it will become a habit.

3. Choose to use natural products at home

When doing household chores, you can substitute chemical cleaners with natural eco-friendly cleaning products to avoid leaving a chemical residue that may be irritating to those with sensitive skin, children and pets. Try the cleaning tablets by SimplyGood which are made from naturally derived and biodegradable ingredients and pack a cleaning punch on different surfaces including glass, bathroom tiles, floors and countertops.

4. Opt for clean beauty products for personal grooming

Clean beauty products for personal care are made with natural ingredients that are said to be gentler and more beneficial for sensitive and irritation-prone skin. For example, Sand & Sky’s Australian Pink Clay mask uses natural pink clay to remove toxins and impurities from the skin while the range of tea-infused skincare products by Teaology contain natural ingredients to boost the skin’s condition. For a touch of luxury, Diego Dalla Palma’s gold infusion youth serum contains 28 natural oils and pure gold leaves to promote skin regeneration.

5. Make your own reusable products

Get creative by repurposing what you already have in your home. Check out this unique Beeutiful DIY beeswax wrap kit which allows you to create your own reusable and waterproof beeswax fabric wraps with your own choice of recycled fabric as a substitute for single-use plastic clingwrap.

Or you could upcycle your favourite pieces of well-loved clothing by using them to make a reusable utensil pouch or a furoshiki (bento box wrap cloth) to carry your packed meals in style.

6. Buy sustainably sourced or produced products

Look beyond the surface by purchasing products that are sustainably-sourced or produced. By supporting these brands, you will help to ensure that eco-conscious initiatives are implemented at various stages of the supply chain. In this way, your actions have an even bigger impact. Such brands include Spinelli, which uses sustainably-sourced 100% premium Arabica beans and eco-friendly vineyard Bonterra, a zero-waste certified wine company with a sustainable production process.

7. Support businesses that have a multi-faceted sustainable ethos

Sustainability can take on different forms that go above and beyond environmentally conscious initiatives. For instance vegan outerwear brand Save the Duck, which is committed to avoiding animal exploitation and guaranteeing the health, safety and equity of the stakeholders in its supply chain, offers jackets that are made from non-animal products and recycled materials.

There’s also Banyan Tree, a hospitality and lifestyle products organisation which is committed to implementing environmentally-friendly practices in its properties and provides fair employment to empower the communities it has a presence in. Its range of cruelty-free wellness and lifestyle products are also carefully formulated with natural ingredients so that they are as good for the planet as they are for you.
